Comedy Central’s New ‘First Screen’ App

comedycentralnewlogo2010al3Comedy Central today released its new iPhone and iPad app, which includes full episodes from the most recent season of “South Park” and next-day availability of ‘The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,’ and ‘The Colbert Report.’ While many networks have focused resources on apps that offer a rich second screen experience, Comedy Central does not expect fans to use the app while concurrently watching its programming on TV.

“We did a lot of research with our audience and found what they want from Comedy Central is full episodes our shows and they want to be able to share their favorite moments of those shows with friends,” Steve Grimes, Senior Vice President, Multiplatform Programming & Strategy, Comedy Central, told Lost Remote.  “That’s why the Comedy Central app is a first screen experience, not a companion to watching the network on TV.  In addition to almost 200 full episodes the Comedy Central app has an easy share functionality built in which allows fans to preview at all the sharable moments from each show and post them to social media or send them via e-mail or instant message. Every Comedy Central show has a vibrant social following and some of the best posts appear in the app alongside the episodes.”

Utilizing a successful tactic that other Viacom networks have used in the past to drive downloads of its new apps, Comedy Central will make available exclusively to app users previews of two forthcoming shows, ‘Trip Tank’ and ‘Comedy Underground with Dave Attell.’  Advance episodes of the new season of ‘Inside Amy Schumer’ will also premiere exclusively in the app a week before its linear debut.

Comedy Central understands that this is not the first TV app, but according to Grimes, “being first wasn’t our objective.”

Grimes continued: “We have spent time building an experience which is unquestionably Comedy Central. This is the first time fans will be able to get all our current shows and some all-time favorites, whenever and wherever they want. With our three nightly shows (The Daily Show, The Colbert Report & @midnight) we offer every fan great content and a reason to come back every day.   For those that sign-in with their TV provider, we also offer the ultimate way to catch up with every show on the network.”
