NBC debuts 2 social apps for the London Olympics

By Natan Edelsburg

It’s not just the first social Olympics, but the first second screen Olympics. NBC has just launched their highly-anticipated apps to complement their broadcast of the London Games. The free apps, which are available for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and select Android devices, are designed to sync with TV and provide all the detailed content you might be looking for during the events. Here are the details.

To prove their dedication to multiple screens the network has launched not one, but two apps, which are both built and powered by Adobe. “NBC Olympics Live Extra” will be focused on providing over 3,500 hours of live streamed content. Teleco subscribers will have to authorize into the network using Synacor’s technology. The second app, simply title “NBC Olympics”, will provide highlights schedules, results and a new broadcast sync feature called “Primetime Companion”.

This history-making app will stream “all 32 sports, the awarding of all 302 medals as well as event rewinds.” To go even further, the app will bring their linear broadcasts onto the second screen as well from NBC Sports Network, MSNBC, CNBC and Bravo. As we explained when NBC announced its unprecedented streaming effort, viewers will need to authenticate via TV Anywhere, proving they subscribe to NBC’s channels via a participating cable, satellite or IPTV service (above).

Traditionally, when watching a sporting event with multiple competitions going on at the same time, you’d have to rely on the broadcast experts to show you the different options. With this app you’ll be able to watch streams dedicated to each event, truly proof that this is a game-changer for the 2012 games. NBC might earn their very own “please take my money” site by the end of the Olympics.

NBC calls it the “ultimate complementary, second-screen experience” for the Olympics, and this app will be for the Olympic-obsessed. Features include, “short-form highlights, event schedules, TV and online listings, results, athlete profiles, columns and the new Primetime Companion feature.” The Primetime Companion feature is also an Olympic game changer. “Users can go deeper into the broadcast with trivia, polls, slideshows, videos and athlete bios all synced with what is being presented on NBC,” according to the network. There won’t be a need for any fancy audio recognition technology because it will only need to check your device’s clock when you open it to sync up with the live broadcast (simple solutions are always the best). There will of course be social sharing, too.

You can also localize the app, so NBC affiliates can program their own Olympics news into the experience — that’s Seattle’s KING 5 in the left column.
