Most popular social media accounts in TV

By Cory Bergman

Since Lost Remote is a blog about social TV, we’re often asked, who has the most fans and followers in the business? So today, we’re unveiling our leaderboard of the most popular social media accounts spanning local, network and cable TV.

Now, I know what you might be thinking — the number of Facebook fans and Twitter followers alone doesn’t define quality or engagement. Very true, but it’s a good first step, especially since there’s nowhere on the web (that we can find) that ranks the most popular accounts in TV. In the coming weeks, we hope to add more data points — as well as growth/decline numbers.

You’ll notice some interesting nuggets in the data. First of all, getting on Twitter’s suggested user list in the early days made a huge impact. For example, all five of the top network and cable TV journalists were on the list. The bigger you are, the faster you grow.

On the local TV front, we found that larger-market stations top the Twitter charts, but medium-market stations are better at Facebook. (See our recent stories on WJW in Cleveland and KUTV in Salt Lake.) Interestingly, Fox affiliates — and shows — seem to do better than others on Facebook.

We may have missed some stations here and there, as trying to find the top accounts is not easy. We may divide out the top stations by market size in the near future. Also, we’re working on the “top local TV journalists on Facebook” category, so please feel free to help by pointing out a few accounts. (Just let us know in comments, via @lostremote on Twitter or post on our Facebook wall.)

More to come, as we plan on writing stories on several of the success stories in our social media leaderboard.
