James Franco deletes his Twitter account

By Cory Bergman

After joining Twitter just in time for the Oscars — and becoming the first host to tweet from the stage — James Franco has pulled down his @jamesfranco account.

First, everyone thought it was an April Fool’s joke. Then Gawker explains:

Thursday night, Franco tweeted a picture of himself getting rubbed up on by a bunch of naked women for a new short film by Kids writer Harmony Korine. But the next day, he told Politico that “Social media is over.” Why? “My thought was ‘this is my Twitter. I can do whatever I want.’ But certain companies I work with contacted me about what I was saying.”

And he finds that surprising? If you’re a multimillion dollar Hollywood talent, Twitter is a marketing channel with the responsibility that comes with it. There’s very little difference between what you say on TV and what you say on Twitter. You can’t go “Charlie Sheen” and expect no consequences.

Some have reported that Franco has just locked his account, but it’s clearly been deleted. He may have started a private account elsewhere, however.
