How ‘Watch What Happens Live’ makes GIFs part of the production

By Natan Edelsburg

It’s no surprise that GIFs have made a huge comeback as a major social TV tool. While almost every major network has a Tumblr presence online for GIFs and often even professional GifMakers not many live productions have incorporate GIFs into the linear broadcast in a GIF way. Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live (produced by Embassy Row) has changed that with their “Gif of the Night.”

Lost Remote attended Monday night’s taping with Lauri Peterson and Mark Feuerstein and experienced first hand how important the GIF has become. The show even has a Tumblr dedicated to the show’s GIFs. The GIF segment communicates everything from a highlight of the day, to a compromising moment on a Bravo show to a flat out hilariously expression from a cast member. On the live streamed after-show Andy was asked to come up with a tagline if he were a Housewife. Seeing the GIF was almost even funnier than seeing him do it in person.

Tweets on-air are almost old-school, there’s no better social content to put on air than an animated GIF. Here’s the “Gif of the Night” from the episode we attended.
