GetGlue goes local with TV station partnership

Atlanta’s WXIA is the first local TV station to work with the TV check-in service GetGlue. Viewers can now check into 11Alive newscasts via GetGlue’s mobile apps or 11Alive.com.

“11Alive’s locally-produced newscasts are now included in the GetGlue database, allowing Atlantans to check in to local newscasts and earn stickers,” explains 11Alive’s Chris Sweigart. And judging by the check-in counts (below) — thousands for each show since last week, with the morning shows doing the best — it seems like a natural match.

“Your local news is a very personal thing,” explains GetGlue’s Kimber Myers in a video posted on 11Alive.com. “You invite someone into your home every day. I think it’s a great opportunity to reward people for watching your shows.”

Beyond rewarding viewers, GetGlue’s value proposition is check-ins spark tweets and Facebook status updates — peer-to-peer promotion for the shows. The big question in my mind is if people will continue to check-in to the same newscast, day after day, after winning a sticker. But if 11Alive can shake things up with new stickers for new things, they may be able to keep the check-in momentum moving.
