Everything ‘Buffy’ and Meerkat

By Karen Fratti

buffyWe can’t cover everything during a week, but that doesn’t mean we wouldn’t like to. Also, we were too busy live-streaming our lunch choices anyway.

Here are our picks for a little weekend reading:

1) While the “X-Files” announced that it was coming back for a television “event,” Twitter was busy fighting over “Buffy” after The Toast published this list of real Internet fan debates. Fans have always been rabid online, but could you imagine if Twitter was accessible during ‘Once More, With Feeling?’ Insert ‘praying hands’ emoji here.

2) HBO announced that it was producing a daily newscast of Vice yesterday. Here’s the time Alan Wolk and I unwittingly said the same thing about the move. Of course, he says it better. From the L.A. Times:

“It’s just a smart move,” said Alan Wolk, an analyst with Texas-based research firm Diffusion Group. “This gives people, especially young viewers who are hard to pin down, a reason to go there every day.” Wolk said this shows there’s an “opening for a new personality for millennials to get their information from.” Further, he believes Vice could be in a strong position to attract viewers as the 2016 presidential election heats up.

3) I know you think you don’t need to read more about Periscope, or Meerkat, but your crazy aunt might. In which case, you can send her this HuffPost piece on why live-streaming is the next big thing:

When you compare both apps, it’s clear that Periscope is much more refined and intuitive than Meerkat. This is likely due to the amount of development time that went into each: Twitter says developers worked on Periscope for a year, whereas Meerkat founder Ben Rubin has said he built Meerkat in only eight weeks.
