By Natan Edelsburg

Last week’s Lost Remote NYC show brought together the best and most forward-thinking minds of the social TV industry. Ryan Osborn, NBC News Vice President of Digital Innovation took the stage to discuss one of the most important issues that has arisen for TV networks who deliver news via social.

After the AP’s account was hacked recently Twitter has never been under more pressure to up its security so hackers can’t take over so easily. We caught up with Ryan after the event about his talk and the importance of security.

Lost Remote: Why is social media security one of the most important issues for TV news?
Ryan Osborn: News is traveling faster than ever before and misinformation has real consequences. News organizations represent trusted voices on these social platforms. Security is integral for our journalists to deliver accurate reporting in a way users can rely on.

LR: Will a Twitter two-step sign on, end Twitter hacks?
RO: A two-step sign on would definitely be a move in the right direction. However, we’re not naïve and there will always be issues (some of which may be out of the control of a platform like Twitter) but it’s clearly an area in need of improvement.

LR: Anything else?
RO: Social media platforms have been great partners to news organizations. That said, the industry needs to come together to address the important issue of security and collaborate on possible solutions. Within news orgs, I think all journalists who handle social media need to partner with their IT departments to make sure they understand the challenges.
