Does ‘Hashtag Activism’ Work?

GirlsWe cover a lot examples of the intersection between social media and TV for entertainment, but there’s also an overlap between celebrities-both on TV and off-and social good that often showcases the power of social media.

The hundreds of abducted schoolgirls in Nigeria–and the flurry of activity and action the hashtag #BringBackOurGirls has caused around the world–brings into question whether social-media “hashtag activism” actually moves the ball forward in situations that require activism.

Cosmopolitan Magazine’s senior writer Jill Filipovic penned a piece on the topic, and told MSNBC her concerns.

“My concern about the BringBackMyGirls hashtag is that it will become another #Kony2012, where we saw this massive social media movement, but ask someone today what country was Joseph Kony from, and see if they can even answer you,” Filipovic said, adding that it’s great social media is now active on the missing schoolgirls’ story, but context is important.

TV and movie stars have been very active with the #BringBackOurGirls movement, including Angelina Jolie, Sean Penn, Justin Timberlake, Kerry Washington, Amy Poehler, Katie Holmes, Christina Aguilera, P.Diddy, Anne Hathaway, and more.
