CNN Is a ‘Sugardaddy’ for New Video Network

By Karen Fratti

CNN and Turner announced a new video service called Great Big Story that’s focused on telling “great stories wherever you watch video.” People interested in seeing what they’re doing will have to “like” their Facebook page, or download the app or watch from their desktop. In November, they’ll be set up for YouTube and then head to YouTube, Snapchat Discover, and eventually connected TVs and Roku, Amazon Fire, the whole gamut.

They certainly have personality and know what you’re thinking:

Let me guess, you’re targeting millennials? 1. We don’t like your tone. 2. We’re storytellers. We want everyone to share great big stories. But we’re pretty darn sure these “millennials” of whom you speak are hungry for more than what’s out there these days. There’s a gap. We’re going to fill it.

They are planning on releasing three to five videos a day and hint at a short film set for release in November in their press release. Today, they have a film about finding Lisa Frank, what it’s like to run into a hurricane, and a bit about how neon works. They call CNN and Turner their “sugar daddy,” since that’s where their cash comes from. Great Big Story plans on doing branded content instead of getting into the pre-roll game, which is the only way to go anyway if you’re starting out on social networks.
