AOL, NBCUniversal Announce Distribution Partnership, Web Series

By Karen Fratti

jamesfrancoAOL announced their 2015 lineup across all of their platforms, including  MAKERS, The Huffington Post, TechCrunch, Engadget, Cambio, and AOL.com. To help them create and distribute snackable, shareable video content, they’ve also partnered with NBCUniversal.
As of this summer, exclusive NBCUniversal video clips will stream on AOL On, incluing the mobile app and all 16 of the OTTs that support it. Clips and segments will come from all of their networks, so be prepared to see lots of Real Housewives and Late Night bits all over AOL. Most interestingly, the two media companies are co-producing an original web series and developing linear, weekly live programming. Bob Lord, President of AOL, Inc said in a statement that:
AOL was an early leader in digital video, doubling down on both premium original video content and the creation of an open video platform that focuses on deep economics of scale within an increasingly converging media ecosystem. Key to this strategy are partnerships with some of the world’s most renowned media companies, and we are thrilled to be able to put NBCUniversal’s premium video programming front and center for AOL multi-platform users.
In the U.S., AOL is the third largest video hub besides YouTube and Facebook, it’s no small thing for NBCUniversal’s content. Dermot McCormack, AOL, President of Video and Studios said:
We are embarking on a whole new era of digital content…we are reimagining the definition of original programming and setting the vision for the content industry’s future, which we believe to be the very best of what TV does combined with the mobility, interactivity and openness of the internet. Content is still king but it’s the kingdom that is changing.
Some of the renewed shows announced at the New Fronts are Park Bench With Steve Buscemi, which was nominated for an Emmy, and Making A Scene With James Franco. Other new programs include lifestyle and news programming.
