An inside look at how IntoNow’s ‘CapIt’ is making photos of TV social

This past year, was the year of the image maturing on the social web. From Pinterest to Instagram, to animated GIFs on Tumblr, it’s never been more fun and social to customize and mold photos about your favorite TV shows. Here’s how Yahoo’s IntoNow users are using their “CapIt” feature to turn photos about TV into mini, customized memes.

According to Yahoo, “CapIt works by capturing one image per second of 190+ TV channels, which is more than 15 million images a day!” They “hold on to those images for a week so that a user could also ‘Cap’ an image if they are watching time-shifted within the week – once a user chooses to ‘CapIt,’ the feature presents a stream of still images from the live broadcast or show.” Here’s an example of a user’s hilarious Cap from IntoNow user Sarah Green from the recent 30 Rock episode where (spoiler alert) Liz Lemon gets married.

According to Yahoo, “IntoNow maintains a fingerprint database of over 266 million minutes of television,” which is the equivalent of watching 200 TVs simultaneously playing different shows for six years.” Miso’s new app Quips is also focusing on “TV moments” that fans love the most. As fans have the tools to define their favorite TV moments and images, social TV producers and marketers will more easily be able to incorporate them into TV.
