Most Young People Get Their News From Social Media

More 18-to-24 year olds get their news from social media than television, according to a new report from The Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism.

The findings revealed that 28 percent of people in this age group claim that social media is their main source for news while only 24 percent of these people cite TV. The research is based on a YouGov survey of more than 50,000 online news consumers in 26 countries around the globe. Forty-eight percent of those surveyed revealed that a news website or app was their first news source on their phones, followed by 33 percent who cited social media sites.

The data also revealed that 51 percent of people with online access use social media as a news source. In addition, less than 10 percent of readers in English-speaking countries have paid for a subscription to read online news in the past year.
