Author and journalist William Powers argues that Americans have overloaded on the Internet–urging readers to follow the example of 19th Century author Henry David Thoreau and unplug every week.
In a PBS Newshour interview (the video is embedded above), Powers revealed that he makes his family unplug the Internet from Friday through Monday morning. What do you think of this approach to writing and living?
Here’s an excerpt from the interview: “Thoreau said that — noted that people in his time had become addicted to going to the post office to check their mail. He said that, in proportion, as our inward life fails, we go more constantly and desperately to the post office … Do what Thoreau did, which is learn to have a little disconnectedness within the connected world.”
