Privacy & eCommerce Tips for Booksellers

By Jason Boog

At Mediabistro’s Digital Privacy Forum yesterday, Gilt Groupe security and compliance director Aleksandr Yampolskiy shared valuable privacy intelligence for eCommerce sites.

His presentation analyzed privacy issues and potential security risks facing sites that sell products online–including online booksellers, self-published authors, and publishers.  Below, we’ve collected five tips for “managing customer information and ensuring secure transactions” from Yampolskiy’s presentation.

1. Make sure your site has a clear policy about what data is collected and when it is collected.
2. Make it your company policy only to ask for the necessary information from your customers.
3. Create a simpler registration process for your customers–the less data needed, the better.
4. Have a security team analyze all your company’s third-party relationships that use your customers’ private information (credit card companies, web hosting sites, etc.).
5. In your contracts, require that these third-party companies to keep customer information confidential and use customer data only to perform necessary services.
