Veronica Roth To Publish Four ‘Divergent’ Short Stories

By Maryann Yin

Young adult novelist Veronica Roth has written four new short stories set in the Divergent universe.

All of the stories will feature the perspective of the lead male character Tobias “Four” Eaton. The actual novels are narrated by the heroine Beatrice “Tris” Prior.

HarperCollins’ Katherine Tegen Books will release all four pieces in eBook format. The first story, “The Transfer,” is scheduled to come out on September 24, 2013. The titles of the other three pieces have not yet been revealed.

Here’s more from Roth’s blog post:

For me, Four has never just been Tris’s love interest or a way for sexual tension to enter the story. He has always been a whole person with a history that affects him (and Tris) in significant ways, and a co-mover of the plot along with Tris. These stories are helping me to delve into his character in a way I never have before, and to build up parts of the world that Tris never experienced due to her limited perspective.

This is not the first time that Roth (pictured, via) has written short fiction. A 13-page story entitled “Free Four” was released on August 7, 2012. For that piece, Roth re-wrote a scene found in the first book from Four‘s perspective.

Divergent fans have so much to look forward to in the near future. One month after the first short story comes out, the publisher will release Allegiant (the final installment of the Divergent trilogy). A movie adaptation of the first book starring Shailene Woodley as Tris is currently in-the-works.
