University of Chicago Press Republishes ‘The Golden Primer’

By Maryann Yin

Professor J. M. D. Meiklejohn wrote The Golden Primer in 1884, teaching 19th Century children how to read. Book Bench reports that the University of Chicago Press has recently republished his primer.

Here’s more about the book: “Meiklejohn advocates methods for teaching literacy that are still in use, encouraging the nascent reader to interact with words on the page, point to them, count them, and incorporate them into phrases and rhyming verse. The new edition reproduces the original text in facsimile alongside Walter Crane’s gorgeous Arts and Crafts-style illustrations.”

The 64-page book sells for $14.95. What books helped teach you how to read? This GalleyCat contributor had a particular fondness for Dr. Seuss’ rhyme tomes and Stan & Jan Berenstain’s picture book series.
