Save Our Libraries Day Generates 100+ Protests in UK

Over 100 protests took place around the U.K. on Saturday for Save Our Libraries Day. Librarians, writers, and readers stormed local branches to protest the government’s possible plans to close 400 libraries.

According to The Bookseller, protesters hosted read-ins, storytelling, and workshops. Musicians Sly and Reggie traveled to five libraries in jeopardy and played their “We Love Libraries” song–listen to the song in the video embedded above.

Independent publisher Five Leaves hosted a borrow-in and read-out event. According to the publisher’s blog, 400 people attended the event.

Five Leaves editor Ross Bradshaw wrote: “We were very pleased with the numbers attending as we had no idea in advance how many people would turn up. Beeston Library itself has only a small cut in hours in the scheme of things, but everyone seemed to understand it was not just about Beeston, or Nottinghamshire, but about library cuts in Doncaster, the Isle of Wight and Warwickshire… and the culture in which we live. We all have to play a part.” (Via Victoria Strauss)
