Twilight Drives Cullen Up 300 Spots in Name Rankings; Atticus and Holden Stay Strong

By David

Edward-Cullen.jpgLast year was a good year for the name Cullen, which jumped nearly 300 spots in the Social Security Administration’s list of most popular names.

The New York Times points out the clear connection between the name’s new popularity and Edward Cullen, the vampire star of the Twilight series.

We decided to look into a few other names made famous by fictional characters to see where they stand. See the results after the jump.

Holden sits at 333rd, having risen about 100 places over the last decade. Seymour isn’t in the top 1000, but maybe it’ll see a spike pegged to J.D. Salinger’s death?

Romeo and Juliet are 411 and 319, respectively, and both are slowly getting hotter.

Santiago, the name of the main character in The Old Man and the Sea is – mysteriously – perched at 130.

Atticus is at 609, but Boo and Scout don’t even rank in the top 1000.

Jay–as in Gatsby–is 414th and Nick is 989. (If that seems incorrect, consider that Nicholas is 32nd.)

And Dedalus, Oskar and Augie, iconic as they are, don’t even rank. Neither do Humbert or Lolita.
