To promote their new e-newsletter, the International Thriller Writers have launched 150thrillers.com, a sweepstakes where every subscriber to the newsletter is entered in a drawing for signed copies of, you guessed it, 150 thrillers. Even a dabbler in the genre like myself can spot some choice picks in the complete inventory, but just as interesting was the reaction from marketing expert Seth Godin, who praised the ITW members for recognizing that banding their combined readerships together and creating even more overlap was to everyone’s advantage. “Lee Child doesn’t compete with David Morrell,” Godin observes. “Lee Child competes with TV or boredom. As Tim O’Reilly says, his enemy is obscurity. By using the Net to coordinate their audiences, they all win.”
