By Maryann Yin

The Washington Post tasked 10 designers to adapt poetry using animation. This project was organized to celebrate the 20th anniversary of National Poetry Month.

The video embedded above features Phil Borst’s interpretation of Victoria Chang’s “The Boss Calls Us at Home”; this poem can be found in Chang’s 2013 collection, The Boss. The selected poems touch on a number of different subjects such as pain, beloved singers, and the tragic September 11 attacks.

These pieces were written by Kevin Young, Edward Hirsch, Mary Karr, Dunya Mikhail, Nick Flynn, John Yau, Patricia Lockwood, Michael Robbins, Tracy K. Smith, and Chang. The designers include Art & Graft, Ellen Porteus, Charlie Brand, Hannah Jacobs, James Price, Bran Dougherty-Johnson, Paul Cooper, Rafael Verona, Muti, and Borst.
