The Wall Street Journal Book Club to Read Moby-Dick

By Maryann Yin

Moby Dick (GalleyCat)David Gilbert will serve as this month’s host of The Wall Street Journal book club. For this group’s next read, he has chosen Moby-Dick; or, The Whale by Herman Melville.

In an interview with the publication, Gilbert discusses why he enjoys Melville’s book: “To see all that violence and then the sweetness at its core can get to me. A lot of it is just the search for meaning that all the characters are on. Sometimes just the turns of phrase can get me going. There are so many aspects of it that can get me on the verge of tears.”

In the past, this book club has read The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, and Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel. What books would you recommend as future selections?
