Philosophers Launch a News Site

By Dianna Dilworth

philosophersmailThe School of Life has created a new news site called The Philosophers’ Mail, which looks a lot like The Daily Mail but has a very unusual take on headlines.

Rather than just report big stories, the team of journalists are writing these stories from the point of view of  philosophers. For example, today’s headlines are: “How Much We Wanted Amanda Knox to Get Away With It,” “Kristen Stewart’s Socks Provide Lesson in Friendship,” and “One Bowl of Dutch Strawberries Could Save Your Relationship.” The site categorizes news into various themes including: Perspective, Tragedy, Disaster, Virtues, Capitalism, Shopping, Utopia and Relationships.

Here is more about why they launched this site from their blog: “Because nowadays, the most attractive, charming, sexy and compelling news outlets enjoy unparalled influence over the minds of tens of millions of people. But unfortunately, they rarely put out content that might make the world a better place. At the same time, there are lots of serious, earnest good people attempting to change things, but they put out publications full of very interesting and dense articles that only reach tiny and already-convinced audiences. So the good ideas go nowhere and the not-so-great ideas mesmerise us from every screen. Therefore, the world doesn’t change. The goal of the Philosopher’s Mail is to prove a genuinely popular and populist news outlet which at the same time is alive to traditional philosophical virtues.”
