‘The King’s Stilts’ Turns 75

By Maryann Yin

stilts2014 marks the 75th anniversary of the publication of The King’s Stilts by Theodor Seuss Geisel (better known as Dr. Seuss).

Unlike many of the rhyme master’s most popular picture books, this story is written in prose.

For those who are looking to schedule in some play time, we’ve rounded up three ways to celebrate this momentous occasion.

1) Have your own Stilt Hour by taking a stilt dancing class! This art form is highly revered in African-Caribbean culture.

2) Plant trees in honor of the Kingdom of Binn’s mighty Dike Trees. The Trees for the Future organization’s website has more information on how to take action.

3) Plan a trip to Springfield, Massachusetts to visit the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden. While you’re there, pose for pictures with one of the most famous environmentalists of children’s literature The Lorax.
