Ray Dolin, a hitchhiker who was working on a memoir about his travels called The Kindness of America, was shot while traveling. He has been hospitalized as his wound heals.

UPDATE: The Associated Press has a shocking new report that Dolin actually shot himself: “Authorities believe Dolin, who is recovering at a Miles City hospital, shot himself as a desperate act of self-promotion but offered no further details. The case remains under investigation, and charges against Dolin are possible.”

According to the previous Associated Press report, the 39 year-old West Virginia resident was sitting down to have lunch on the side of the road in Montana, when a random driver pulled over and shot Dolin in the arm.

Last month, cult filmmaker John Waters hitchhiked across America to collect material for his up book entitled Carsick. Do you think author’s should risk their lives to collect stories for a book? (Via The Los Angeles Times and Self Pub Review)
