The First Book Trailer with Pre-Release Buzz

By Neal

Book trailer oneupmanship just hit new heights, as the NYT Sunday style section gives front-page treatment to the socialite-studded commercial for The Manny, as Allen Salkin recounts how debut novelist Holly Peterson got Carole Radziwill to do a sex scene, Tinsley Mortimer to make with the suggestive banter, and former MTV personality Karen Duffy to rap. You may be cringing, sure, but, hey, it got The Manny on the front page of the style section, which is more than Nan Talese and Colum McCann did for Ian McEwan. (And before you suggest that the On Chesil Beach film beat the Manny trailer to the pre-release buzz milestone, let’s keep in mind that it’s an infomercial, not a commercial.)
