The #askteddywayne hashtag pokes fun at Teddy Wayne’s fluffy twerking piece, a piece which relies heavily on the underlying joke about white people not understanding black people, and some ick-inducing socio-economic stereotypes.
Wayne’s Twitter feed is now protected. The hashtag is still alive online, as readers debate this satirical passage from his essay:
Explain that twerking is a dance move typically associated with lower-income African-American women that involves the rapid gyration of the hips in a fashion that prominently exhibits the elasticity of the gluteal musculature.
Twitter user Shauna Sayomi tweeted that Wayne had “emailed me back with an apology/explanation.”
