Stephenie Meyer Talks About Her Gender Swap Project and Midnight Sun at New York Comic Con

By Maryann Yin

Twilight 10th Anniversary (GalleyCat)Stephenie Meyer sent shock waves out into the world with the announcement of Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined. During a New York Comic Con panel, she talked about this gender bender project, the 10th anniversary of Twilight, and the unfinished Midnight Sun manuscript.

Meyer regards Life and Death as bonus material; she doesn’t consider it a new book. The writing process for this story served as a therapeutic exercise for her; she felt it was a nice way for her to return to the Twilight universe. She also relished the opportunity to correct mistakes that were featured in the original Twilight novel.

At one point, Meyer was asked to give a status update for the unfinished Midnight Sun. She revealed a personal theory that this manuscript, which features the story of Twilight told from Edward Cullen’s point of view, may be “cursed” because every time she does try to work on it, an interruption seems to follow. She also confessed that one person who really wants her to complete this book is her own mother.

Back in 2008 when Meyer first announced this project, a leak took place that really hurt her. Ever since this unfortunate incident, she has not wanted to continue working on the story. Click here to read the Midnight Sun partial draft posted on Meyer’s website.
