Solidifying Takeover, Perseus Guts Seal Press

By Neal

One of the many brands that Perseus absorbed in its recent purchase of Avalon Publishing Group was the small feminist publisher Seal Press. Last Friday, Seal vice-president Krista Lyons-Gould sent out a bulletin informing the imprint’s authors of the consequences of that acquisition: Although every project currently in development will proceed as planned, after that the publication schedule has been slashed by more than 60 percent. In addition, the majority of the seven-woman staff has been let go; two editors will depart on June 1, with the managing editor leaving in November. Senior editor Brooke Warner and publicity manager Darcy Cohan will remain in place, however, working with Lyons-Gould to continue “publishing excellent books by women, for women.”
