Sloane Crosley Uses Small Chickens to Illustrate New Book

By David

thumbs_suzy.jpgSloane Crosley launched the website for her new book today, and at its core is… a bunch of tiny chickens.

Crosley has done this sort of thing before. She promoted her first book, I Was Told There’d Be Cake, by making miniature dioramas to accompany the collection. For her new book, she outsourced the concept to Sloane Tanen, a visual artist and author who photographs tiny fake chickens in darkly humorous scenes.

Crosley asked Tanen to work her chicken magic on a few essays in How Did You Get This Number, out on June 15. The result is here. Also on the website, Crosley interviews Tanen about how she completed the project. As you can imagine, there was much to be said about the fact that they were “each other’s first Sloane.” (“I don’t think of myself as an illustrator per say [sic] so it was hard to take a back seat, especially to another Sloane,” writes Tanen.)

There’s really nothing more exciting than a fresh, original and well-executed publicity campaign for a book, so we were looking forward to seeing what Crosley would come up with collection number two. We think it’s safe to say she didn’t chicken out.
