She Left Out the High Alcoholism Rate

Yesterday’s item about Andrew Sullivan‘s rage against the machine drew a response from an insider with a related beef against the publishing industry. “I have worked in the industry for years and I have never seen so many people who have emotional problems,” says this anonymous reader. “They either suffer from depression or a lack of interpersonal skills. The pay in publishing does not attract the best people and that includes me I guess. Publishing is not a field that has a bright future because kids today do not want to read and the industry does nothing about it. Sometimes I think it would be better to wash cars.”

DISCUSS: You might not ever get rich in book publishing, but is it better than digging a ditch? Is it the place to be if you planned on being a star? And, even if all the complaints are true, is it really that much worse than any of the other corporate environments out there? Come on and sing it for me!
