American Association of School Librarians (AASL) and Penguin Young Readers Group has partnered together to launch the “Miss Honey Social Justice Award.” This prize was named after the kindhearted teacher in Roald Dahl’s beloved novel, Matilda.
The purpose behind this venture is to honor the work of an AASL member librarian. All contestants must collaborate with a teacher to work on a project, oversee an event, or organize a program in the name of social justice utilizing school library resources. This year, participants were asked to draw inspiration from the classic title, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Betsy Lobmeyer, a library media specialist at Plymell Elementary, met with several educators. She recruited 50 students; this group devoted two weeks to making 13 tied fleece blankets and 22 embroidered flannel blankets. This team (pictured) plans to donate “Charlie’s Ever Warming Blankets” to babies in Ecuador. What do you think?
