scholastic304Tapping into the excitement surrounding the upcoming Olympic Games, Scholastic is calling young readers to “Get Book Fit” this month.

The idea is get kids to exercise their minds by reading more books this month. The publisher has created a free Facebook calendar app to help parents and teachers inspire young readers. The app lets users “scratch off” tips from experts on how to motivate kids to keep their brains active throughout the month. The tips includes access to free eBooks through Scholastic’s Storia app.

“Just as any athlete needs to practice a sport in order to get better, kids need to practice reading to keep their brains sharp and become proficient readers,” stated Maggie McGuire, Vice President, Scholastic Kids and Parents Channels. “The new year reminds us to start new, healthy habits and getting ‘Book Fit’ is a perfect way to remind kids that reading is part of having a healthy lifestyle.”
