Scene @ The Crier Fundraiser

Christine Smallwood and Doree Shafrir posed at a fundraising party at Club Midway for The Crier, the literary nonfiction magazine they co-founded a little over a year ago.

As attendees chipped in to raise funds to publish the forthcoming third issue, Mike Albo dropped by to read some of his recent contributions to Gawker, where Shafrir works as part of the editorial team, along with an essay for Black Book for which, he was careful to point out, they still owe him $1400.

(Well, okay, they owe him for several essays, not just that one, but you get the idea.) Smallwood and Shafrir also put the word out that they’re looking for a business manager, so if you’ve always wanted to run a literary magazine in your spare time (because Lord knows you’re not going to get paid a lot), you should look into it—there needs to be a place to run cool articles like Maureen Tkacik‘s story about not getting the Dave Chappelle story.

The evening also led to something of a media blogospheric convergence, as returning Gawker catherder Choire Sicha was kind enough to snap this picture of the first meeting between active Gawker and GalleyCat correspondents (at least I think it’s the first; Sarah might’ve met Emily Gould once while I wasn’t looking). Especially kind, considering how many attempts it took before I came out looking presentable. At least now I’ll have a better headshot the next time I wind up on their website
