In an interview with NBC’s Rock Center with Brian Williams, author Rick Riordan revealed the final book in The Kane Chronicles will be titled The Serpent’s Shadow.

The new novel will be released on May 1st. According to Business Wire, Disney plans to run two million copies in the first printing. Follow this link to read a short excerpt from The Serpent’s Shadow.

We’ve embedded the cover above–what do you think? Riordan declared this piece to be his favorite of the three Kane covers. It was created by Brooklyn-based illustrator John Rocco who has designed all the covers for The Percy Jackson series, The Heroes of Olympus series and The Kane Chronicles.

In addition to the final Kane book, Riordan will also be working on book three in The Heroes of Olympus series entitled Mark of Athena (due out in Autumn 2012), The Kane Chronicles Survival Guide (due out on March 20th) and a short story collection set in Percy Jackson‘s universe called The Demigod Diaries (due out on August 14th). The short story collection will contain the debut story penned by Riordan’s young son, Haley.

Here’s more from Riordan’s blog post: “Since Haley inspired the entire Percy Jackson series, it seemed only right that I asked him to contribute his own original spin on Percy’s world for this book. I was amazed at what Haley came up with. His brother Patrick, who’s a tough editor, was quick to say, ‘Dad, his story is better than yours!’ Haley ponders the question: ‘What happened to the demigods who fought with Kronos’s army after the battle in Manhattan?’ This is the story of one such demigod, and I have to admit, some of Haley’s ideas are so good I wish I’d come up with them!”
