Random, Harper Plant Stakes in Abu Dhabi

A helpful reader passed along a press release from Abu Dhabi announcing the launch of “a new media content creation zone” called, in a nod to the city’s GPS coordinates, twofour54—something like a cross between an industrial park, a vocational institute, and a media lab that will house “production facilities, infrastructure, training and a new business incubator… for the development of world class Arabic content.” Major news organizations like CNN, BBC, and Thomson Reuters are among the big players involved, but for our purposes there are two companies worth mentioning: Random House is establishing a full publishing operation, “creating fresh material and adapting some of its existing content for the region while investing in developing a stable of successful Arab authors,” while HarperCollins plans to adapt its “Collins Big Cat” educational series for the Arab children’s market, as well as developing new Arabic dictionaries for English, French, and Hindi readers.
