Publishing’s Brightest Moments in 2009

By Jason Boog

beyondthebook.jpgEven while the recession rocked the country in 2009, GalleyCat covered many encouraging and innovative developments in the publishing industry. In a a podcast interview with Beyond the Book, this GalleyCat editor compiled a temporary list of the best moments in publishing in 2009–a counterpoint to the Worst Moments in Publishing list.

These lists are always subjective (and some people won’t be happy with the choices), so we’d love to create a more comprehensive round-up before the new year. To that end, we are looking for more suggestions for the final year-end round up of publishing news. What do you think were the brightest moments for publishing this year?

1. Twitter generates a whole new round of book deals.

2. Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Saga sells lots of books and sweeps the box office.

3. Dan Brown finally turns in his manuscript and sells lots of books.

4. Smartphone book readership increases dramatically.

5. Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble report record orders for their digital readers and books. But they never reveal how many copies.
