shelfawareness.jpgThe Wall Street Journal recently looked at hip spots to host author readings in New York City, uncovering some secrets of literary publicists.

Here’s an excerpt: “Authors of sports memoirs are often given lunch-hour billets at the Wall Street Borders; authors of parenting-themed books are slotted at the B&N at 86th near Lexington because of the many young families in the area. ‘We do very well with thriller writers at Lincoln Triangle,’ said Marilyn Ducksworth, a senior vice president of the Penguin Group.” (Via NY Observer)

That said, a number of readers were also upset about the article’s omission of indie bookstores. Michele Filgate complained on Twitter: “The WSJ disses indie bookstores in this article. Irritates the heck out of me…You would think with all of the amazing indie bookstores in NYC, the reporter would have taken time to interview some!”

If you want to share your bookstore stories, indie or otherwise, Shelf Awareness has launched the Bookstore Bingo hashtag, collecting funny comments overheard in bookstores. Tweet your responses and tag them “#bookstorebingo” to join the fun.
