Theater and festival director Peter Sellars will introduce author Toni Morrison at the Edward MacDowell Medal ceremony this year.

The two haven known each other for nearly two decades and even collaborated on a theater and concert version of Desdemona. During the speech, Sellars will share his perspective on Morrison’s creative genius.

The MacDowell Colony has awarded the medal annually since 1960. The honor is given to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to American culture. Past recipients include: Aaron Copland; Robert Frost; Georgia O’Keeffe; John Updike; and Joan Didion.

The free public 57th annual ceremony will take place on Sunday, August 14, 2016 in Peterborough, New Hampshire.
