Penguin Lets Comics Artists LooseOn Another Round of Modern Classics

By Neal

Several blogs have picked up on Joe Kral’s awesome collection of old-school Penguin covers, and rightly so because they’re awesome pop artifacts, but I’d like to take a moment to consider the latest batch of Penguin Classics “deluxe editions” featuring work by leading independent comics artists, a subject dear to our hearts. Maybe you recall the mini-furor last month over Chester Brown’s rendition of Lady Chatterley’s Lover, but today we’ll look at the two images that left the biggest impressions on me from the batch of books published this month, a mostly abstract cover for Gravity’s Rainbow by Frank Miller and Yoshihiro Tatsumi’s manga-style images for Rashomon and 17 Other Stories, and ask what you think.
