From Gloucestershire, England to Carmel Valley, Calif, writers around the world know the importance of an inspiring work space.

In a photo spread in this weekend’s issue of T Magazine, The New York Times goes inside the office spaces of six authors including: David HareJeanette WintersonLuc SanteJane SmileyPatrice Nganang, and Valeria Luiselli. The series of photos is accompanied by a piece by each author about their work environment. David Hare, author of The Blue Touch Paper, writes:

I WORK IN THE painter Mark Gertler’s old studio in Hampstead, which he took over in 1915. It was here that he painted his antiwar masterpiece ‘‘Merry-Go-Round,’’ which now belongs to the Tate Britain. It was also here that he was said to have wrestled on the bed with, but failed to seduce, Dora Carrington. He killed himself in another studio up the road.
