B&N May Spin-Off Nook Business

Barnes & Noble announced today that sales of Nook devices during the nine-week holiday sales period increased 70 percent from the same period last year.

At the same time, Barnes & Noble is considering spinning-off the Nook business to cope with mounting costs.

eBookNewser has more: “In addition the company reported that digital content sales – which includes eBooks, digital magazines and apps– grew 113 percent during the same 9-week period this year versus last year. The company’s retail sales were $1.2 billion during the 9-week holiday period, up 2.5 percent from last year. BN.com sales were $327 million, a 43 percent over the prior year.”

Kobo also had a good holiday season. The company reported today that eBook gifting was up 200 percent this year, and 500 percent between November and December. eBookNewser has more: “Kobo saw customer signups increase 10X.”
