Nobel Peace Prize Winner Liu Xiaobo’s Wife Under House Arrest

Liu Xia–the activist wife of Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo (pictured)–has been placed under house arrest, CNN reports.

Jailed Chinese writer Liu Xiaobo won the Nobel Peace Prize last week. He was arrested two years ago for writing about political reform in China. After a short trial, a Beijing court sentenced Xiaobo to 11-years in prison and and “two years’ deprivation of political rights” for subversion in his writings.

CNN has an interview with Freedom Now legislative counsel Beth Schwanke about the arrest. Here’s an excerpt: “Upon hearing he had received the peace prize, Schwanke said, Liu Xiaobo began to cry, and said, ‘This is for the martyrs of Tiananmen Square.’ But upon return to Beijing, Liu Xia was not allowed to leave her apartment, Schwanke said. No one is allowed in, and her telephone is believed to be ‘destroyed,’ Schwanke said.” (Via Gawker)
