Night Shade Books, a fantasy, science fiction and horror publisher based in San Francisco, announced yesterday that it is launching a literary imprint called Pugilist Press. Juliet Ulman, formerly of Bantam Dell, will serve as editor-in-chief, and Jason Williams, the founder of Night Shade, will act as publisher.

Ulman spent 11 years at Bantam Dell, acquiring and editing sci-fi, fantasy and literary fiction titles like One for Sorrow by Christopher Barzak, The Magician and The Fool by Barth Anderson, and Palimpsest by Catherynne M. Valente. At Pugilist, she’ll be looking for “tough literary fiction with a certain honesty and texture to it,” according to Ulman in a press release. Jason Williams hopes the press will attract “literary fiction that packs a punch.”

Pugilist is slated to launch in Fall 2011, but really, they’re already an entity. Proof of existence: a freshly launched Twitter feed and a great looking website.
