National Readathon Day to Take Place in January 2015

By Maryann Yin

NationalReadathonDayThumb2The National Book Foundation, Penguin Random House, Goodreads, and Mashable are partnering together to host the first ever National Readathon Day. This marathon reading session will take place on Saturday, January 24th from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Here’s more from the Penguin Random House blog: “You might take for granted how easy it is for you to read this sentence, but millions of Americans still struggle with basic literacy. 40% of American adults are either at or below basic reading proficiency, and 14% are fully illiterate.”

The organizers hope that participants will create a page on Firstgiving.com to raise funds to benefit the National Book Foundation. Those who manage bookstores, libraries, and schools are encouraged to hold reading parties in celebration of this event. (via Goodreads.com)
