Egypt’s most famous writer had been in generally poor health since an assassination attempt in 1994 by militant Muslims offended by his writing, and had been hospitalized for the last month. “Many classified him as a 19th century-style novelist,” his biographer told an AFP reporter, “but in my opinion he surpassed many of the greats from the West.”
