Minneapolis News Chain Closes Shop

The story of the closure of the Shinders newstand biz really isn’t a GalleyCat story per se, but since we don’t have a FishbowlTwinCities yet, I might as well be the one to share it with you. So: Shinders was a chain of newstands with a 91-year history in Minneapolis, one of the city’s most significant distributors of comic books and sports cards. Four years ago, the company was bought by Robert Weisberg, who managed to run the company into the ground, and then took everybody’s name off the company’s bank accounts but his own, presumably to keep silly things like paychecks from taking away what money was left. (Sure, the logic sounds screwy, but as the Minneapolis Star-Tribune tells the story, we’re talking about a guy who was arrested last year with “methamphetamine, Ecstasy, needles and a .40-caliber rifle” in his possession.)
