Miami-Dade Library Supporters Write Commissioners

By Jason Boog

Library supporters mounted a letter-writing campaign over the weekend, fighting the potential closure of 22 libraries in Miami-Dade county.

Follow this link if you want to write letters to Miami-Dade commissioners about the cuts. Earlier this month, the group also released an open letter to Miami-Dade County mayor Carlos Gimenez about how to avoid cuts. Here’s more from the group:

We WILL NOT SETTLE for anything less than FULL FUNDING. 0 closures, but 169 layoffs — the Mayor himself has said the Library System would operate at 3/4 of its current level of operation. Lowering taxes to improve the economy may make sense, but not at the cost of layoffs of individuals who have dedicated time and life and have made a career our of public service — not at the cost of individuals who are the sole breadwinners of their family. What will happen to them, when they are handed their pink slip, and are now overqualified for numerous jobs when employers see that they have a specialized Master’s Degree in Library & Information Science?
