Marvel Comics and ABC News Team Up For Madaya Mom Digital Comic

By Maryann Yin

Madaya Mom Comic (GalleyCat)Marvel Comics and ABC News teamed up to create a digital comic entitled “Madaya Mom: The Story of One Mother’s Unimaginable Struggle For Survival.” This book features actual quotes from a Syrian mother of five children (whose real identity has been concealed) who wanted to inform the world about the difficulties she and her fellow Syrians deal with on a daily basis.

Here’s more from Marvel’s announcement: “In January 2016, ABC News profiled a family trapped inside Madaya, communicating with a mother of five through texts and phone conversations to capture the bleak outlook that she and her family faced every day. ABC News posted daily updates from the mother, detailing her descent into anger and despair as she was reduced to breaking apart their furniture for firewood and boiling leaves for food. Since Madaya has been besieged by forces loyal to the Syrian government of President Bashar al-Assad, the family has been trapped there for over 14 months and has struggled to stay alive as many starve to death in what is effectively an open-air prison.”

Xana O’Neill and Rym Momtaz, two journalists at ABC, shared reports to create this comic book. Dalibor Talajic, an artist, and Miroslav Mrva, a colorist, worked on the illustrations. Click here to watch a behind-the-scenes video that chronicles the creation of this project.
