Kiernan Shipka, the actress who plays Jon Hamm‘s teenage daughter in Mad Men, has landed a starring role in Lifetime’s upcoming adaptation of V.C. Andrews‘ Flowers in the Attic.

She will play one of the unfortunate children in the story, trapped by grandparents after their father dies and mother Heather Graham leaves them. Young actor Mason Dye will play one of the other children. Deadline Hollywood broke the news:

But as the oldest boy (Dye) and girl (Shipka) come of age emotionally and physically while caring for their younger brother and sister, their family’s sordid past entraps them further as they try to survive and escape from the harsh conditions in which they live. Ellen Burstyn plays the children’s grandmother, Olivia.

Andrews died in 1986, but her books have sold 106 million copies.

Simon & Schuster has a book trailer for a vampire novel written under Andrews’ name, Daughter of Darkness. We’ve embedded the video below (image via)
